TRAUMATIC VELOCITY --- Supporting the Supporters
Why “Traumatic Velocity”...When you fall from a significant height, the speed at which you are falling increases until it hits full acceleration at “terminal velocity” ...after which you cannot fall any faster. So - “Traumatic Velocity”...one day, you hit the point where all of the incests, all of the holes in the back yard to take the wife & kids’ bodies, all those floods, fires & bureaucratic stonewalls just add up to too much.
WHO is TRAUMATIC VELOCITY for :...
Traumatic Velocity…. Welcomes those with NON-WAR-ZONE PTSD & other trauma and Stress triggered conditions.
WHAT IS Non-War-Zone PTSD ??...terms like.. “Vicarious Trauma” “Secondary Trauma”
..... how about Emergency Interventions ? Crisis Responders & Supporters ?
There are differences between shell-shock – mutilations, injuries, hunger, dismembered bodies, death, destruction...and..... debriefing the experiences of dismembered bodies, death, devastation, betrayal, incest, pregnancy, diseases, mutilations, injuries, hunger. They are differences of "causation" or "type of experience". HOWEVER - They are not always differences in "affect", or behavioural responses on the individual.
This is NOT a competition. The experiences of our Military & our "First Responders" are completely different & yet have some stunning similarities. Both are real. Both are devastating ....what we need are some better words to acknowledge both. (see BLOG "Preliminary Rider)

PRELIMINARY RIDER
This is NOT a competition. It has taken years of dedicated action to get our military and our First Responders acknowledged for the prices they are paying for service. This is NOT a Competition. WE do not in any way wish to diminish the experiences or the suffering of these people..... but, while I personally, have never seen a dismembered body, never been near an exploding ordinance .. I have worked with haunting horrors.

Social & community services workers, disaster workers, emergency housing workers, family support workers, DV workers....& probably a few journalists, writers, documentary film-makers & camera-operators – because we know, people tell them everything !!

“Traumatic Velocity” - because the concept of terminal velocity captures me (TWtW)....&, for some of us, 1 day, the Velocity of the accumulated traumas just reached the tipping point ... - it became PTSD. Tragically, for too many of us...it simply hit terminal - living with PTSD is "surviving", not "thriving".

Why THIS BLOG ?.... because we are dying. And, because those of us who do wake up on Tuesday morning, those of us who are living with PTSD, with "vicarious trauma"... are doing so with all kinds of difficulties ....
- because about the 3rd time I ran into an old colleague & did a roll-call we realised too often the answer was “didn’t wake up Tuesday morning”,,,heart attack...ulcers...adrenal burnout...stress related hormone diseases. And then there are those among us who simply turned beach fishing onto an X-rated sport...those who are having a drink with breakfast – or 3 after dinner - because the need to over-achieve is all consuming....& is literally consuming us from the inside out (not that I, personally have anything against functioning alcoholism !!!) .;
- For many of us our partners - particularly the Baby Boomers - have health problems of their own. They’re sick of waking up at 1am to find lights still on because YOU are insomniac, or you are continually getting into & out of bed to pace the hallway because the adrenaline won’t let you sleep.
- .....They just want it all to go away...& we are "failing" them !!! Day after Day... REALLY ???
- .. and because we feel unseen.... and we feel alone...
WE ARE NOT ALONE !
